Food Inspiration | Fall 2013
Something strange happens to me this time of year. I may have been completely content with a slice of juicy tomato on bread with vegenaise for lunch or a bit of hummus with cucumber and feta in a pita pocket and now....now I want warm things, baked things, sweet things, things with cinnamon and caramel.
The weather has changed. We start the month of September with highs in the 80's and by the end of the month the highest temperature we experience is somewhere in the low 60's. And it's raining. It takes a body a few minutes to adjust to this. Don't mention the fact that night temps will soon be dipping below freezing and I'll need a warm quilt and a cup of hot cocoa by the fire. It sounds nice....sure. But just a few weeks ago I was living in my flip-flops and hadn't worn a sweater in months. All I'm saying is that it feels sudden.
And whether it's because I need the calories to keep warm or simply the emotional comfort of it -- I NEED a homemade cinnamon roll. With lots of maple syrup, raisins and nuts.
Time to turn on our ovens, ladies. And here's some inspiration to get ideas flowing -- pumpkin muffins with pumpkin seeds? scalloped potatoes with a butternut squash puree instead of cheese? need somewhere to put all those garden carrots, besides making carrot cake {also a good idea}?
